Wholesalers are the Backbone of an Online Drop Shipping Business

November 29, 2007 · 2 Comments

Drop shipping, a very popular term in eBay circles these days as more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon. Without the stress and money worries of stocking inventory and the overhead that goes along with carrying stock in any retail business, it can leave an entrepreneur with more time to concentrate on building the business and marketing the product. Not having the time spent dealing with tagging, boxing, shipping, restocking, ordering and taking care of insurance and paperwork for all of that inventory can sure leave an employee with time to work on the marketing aspects of that product.

With time to spend marketing the product and building a smart online campaign, it can put the drop shipper ahead of the game in no time, if done right of course. Just expecting to jump into the drop shipping business by signing up with any old wholesaler who has product to sell is just ridiculous. Although there are many reputable wholesale companies and wholesale product out there, they are not easy to find and of course, the ones that are easy to find, aren’t usually worth the time.

As a drop shipping eBay seller, the wholesaler is the backbone of your company. Once the product is ordered and paid for on eBay, it is up to you to place the order with your wholesaler. Seems simple on your side and not very time consuming. But then start picturing it from a different angle and think of customer service and how likely your customer is going to be with the speed and quality of the product once it is delivered.

As any eBay seller can tell you, good feedback is critical to a good reputation on eBay and without positive feedback it can be hard to sell anything on eBay. Even though it is your company who found the wholesaler, make the listing on eBay and placed the order for your customer, it is your wholesaler at this point who is responsible for keeping that feedback positive. The wholesaler is responsible for boxing the correct item, tagging it with the right address for your customer and getting it to that customer in a timely manner.

When using any wholesale company for the first time, before shipping product to your actual customers, it is smart for any business to first order an item from the wholesaler and have it shipped to them. It is also smart before signing up with this wholesale company and listing the product on eBay to ask some important questions first. This first shipment and the questions asked should give you a good estimate of things such as timing, quality and efficiency.

Some examples of the questions to ask would be things such as, “once an order is placed, how long until it is shipped?” or “what freight company do you use and what type of service 2 day or ground?” or “what type of labeling do you use on the outside of your boxes?”. These questions are important to both your customers satisfaction and good customer service in any online shipping business. When picking a reputable wholesaler when thinking of going into the drop shipping eBay business, make sure you pick the right one to reflect on your ebay reputation in a positive way.

eBay Powersellers …. Buy with Confidence

November 23, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The eBay Powerseller logo, a powerful marketing tool and one that, when used correctly, can really attract confidence from your customers. When displayed in your ebay listings and used for business cards, catalogs or mass email marketing, it can help your business grow by backing up your companies name with a powerful Corporation like eBay.

Obtaining Powerseller status on eBay is not an easy thing. You have to maintain an average sales volume over the course of 3 months at a high enough quantity to attract eBay’s attention and also maintain other average and percentages on aspects such as your feedback to keep your Powerseller status on eBay.

Many entrepreneurs are drawn to eBay and there is a huge market out there with thousands of new eBay users signing up each day . With the holiday season approaching many “seasonal powersellers” are out there trying to obtain there eBay Powersellers status for next years running. Seasonal Powersellers are a new program out there on eBay and have drawn it turns out, a large crowd.

Many people, eBay motors, eBay seaonal Christmas items or eBay jewerly do a huge business seasonally. They can draw in numbers that make the numbers for the average Powerseller on eBay working the three month average system seem silly. It takes a lot higher numbers to make it as a seasonal Powerseller on eBay and the numbers are displayed by clicking anywhere on the eBay logo on the eBay website, where it details the average volume needed per month or seaonally to become a Powerseller on eBay.

Powersellers also have to keep Feedback on eBay at a consistent level, not dropping below 98% positive in order to maintain status on eBay and stay in the powerseller program. When selling on eBay and shipping items to customers all over the country, it is hard no matter what you are selling to keep your feedback at a high enough quantity and positivity to stay at 98%.

Although it should seem easy to maintain, it is not so easy when shipping such a high volume of product out all over the U.S or of course internationally.. As you enter your average retail store, let’s say even a large corporation like Walmart and even if you have only been there a couple of times, you are bound to have seen a “disgruntled customer” at least once. And how many of those do you think has taken it further than the average employee and asked for “management”. Think of how this must work online and realize that when people are simply “e-mailing” you instead of standing in front of you “in person”, it is a lot easier to show some “big balls” and really say what you mean if you are unhappy.

Keeping this in mind, even the most reputable seller on eBay, whether a powerseller or not, it is a constant challenge to keep your customers happy. I have been selling on eBay for more than 7 years and have been in the office chair industry for over ten and let me tell you, it is hard when shipping product to customers over a long distance to just have everything go easily and not have any problems. No matter what shipping or freight company you use, they are bound to have a number of “claims” because of course, humans are involved in the shipment process and error is expected sometimes, nobody’s perfect.

But when it comes to eBay, you never know who your customers are going to be at the end of a listing and it is impossible to guess where the customer who buys your item will live. Being a Powerseller on eBay requires the eBay seller to work hard, dedicate themselves to good customer service and a good product as well as requiring them to keep up a consistent sales volume each month of loyal customers. Buy with Confidence.

Seasonal Businesses on eBay, Time is Here for Most Sellers

November 21, 2007 · Leave a Comment

During the holiday season, the number of eBay Sellers and trafiic of new customers on eBay, as in normal retail stores is up quite a bit. With all of the deals to be had and the deals that are needed out there, it is no wonder. Even the eBay Powerseler program has started to recognize these “seasonal” eBay sellers in there own seperate categories. If the seasonal sellers on eBay are important enough for the eBay Powerseller team to single out seperately, then it must be a very lucrative business to be in if done right.

Whether it is selling the high end car that many husbands are out there looking for as a gift to make that wife smile, or that all important “extra-popular” doll that grandma has promised to find, the market for eBay sellers is widespread during the holiday season. Sellers that have taken advantage of low prices all year and found those holiday items and gift items on clearance are the smart seasonal sellers. These sellers can spend all year or perhaps even just a few months finding the great discount deals and stocking their holiday inventory.

Of course this takes start up capital, insurance on the items and of course storage fees for all of the product. If a business has the overhead to make a go of it, they can spend their money wisely, buy the product for nothing and then re-sell it once the demand as well as the price is higher.

Selling on eBay…Thinking of Starting a Business From Home

November 18, 2007 · 6 Comments

Many people are making a full time living selling on eBay. When researching “work from home” businesses and opportunities, it is hard not to come across information about selling product on eBay. eBay has made it possible for many mothers to stay at home with their children, disabled workers to find new ways to make money and many entrepreneurs with a unique idea the avenue to make good money without a ton of start up capital.

Are you considering selling on eBay and joining the “Shop Victoriously” campaign? With all of the eBay Stores and Powersellers operating out there, it is obvious that the opportunity is out there. It is up to the hard working entrepreneurs out there to find the niche market they seek and start selling on eBay. The key is to educate yourself on eBay first, learn the eBay community and fully educate yourself on the eBay marketplace.

eBay is it’s own online animal and operates very differently than your standard online retail website. It is critical that the eBayer looking to sell on eBay know the market and understands how eBay operates. UNlike the standard retail online site, eBay offers the buyer many different options and ways to purchase. Each eBay seller deteremines which options they want to offer and each product has a different form of marketing to use that works on eBay.

Like any good marketing campaign, what works for one product does not necessarily work for another. I sell office chairs and have been in the office industry for a number of years now. When I first started selling on eBay, over 7 years ago, I needed to educate myself on the sales aspect. I had been an eBay buyer for many years, always knowing I could find a lower price on eBay when looking for larger items. Selling an item is a whole different story.

Although I already worked in the office furniture and office chair industry, I knew that with the high price tag of office furniture and cost of shipping, it would be difficult to begin selling online without more knowledge of shipping prices and the eBay sales machine. I decided to do what the articles and advice columns tell most eBayers looking to sell on eBay, sell what I had around the home and anything I thought I could find on great discount.

I started out listing various items around the house, such as my old electronics and baby stuff that my two daughters had outgrown. Then I was shopping at Costco and for a Christmas present, I bought my duaghter a train table. The train set came with everything included and was “all the rage” on childrens Christmas lists that year. Every child HAD to have a Thomas the Train set, including my 3 year old.

I spent a ton of time doing research on completed listings on eBay and figuring out the eBay market for various items I had been selling. I decided to do a search on train tables and the “completed listings” for the last 90 days on eBay to see what they were selling for and whether or not the items listings were even ending with buyers. The “completed listing” tool is one of the best tools out there for anyone doing research on an item selling on eBay. How better to learn the market than to get an exact glimpse of what the item has been selling for and how often it sold for the last 90 days on eBay? Sellers can take advantage of this invaluable tool and really learn how to increase their sales if they are smart enough to know about it.

When searching for train tables, I discovered that the set that I purchased with my Costco membership for only $120, was selling on eBay for upwards of $350! Leading me to do a TON of research then an there. Whenever finding a product that seems to have a niche market, don’t let it slip through your fingers, do your research and see if opportunity exists.

After paying between $80-100 shipping for this item, I was still able to turn over these tables for a decent profit and learn a lot about eBay and how to sell a New product. Everything on eBay and each experience you take away from it should further your knowledge of the industry and help you to sell better on eBay.

Wholesale Shippers Making Drop Shipping Work for eBay Sellers

November 16, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Mention drop shipping sales at the next cocktail party you attend and most people would say “What”. When I try and explain what my company does on eBay most people understand once it is explained to them but a simple answer like, “drop shipping” is guaranteed to confuse.

Drop shipping can be defined simply as one business taking an order from a customer online and then placing that order with another company who stocks and ships the item for the customer for the first company. This allows an online business to operate without having the worry of stocking large amounts of inventory or shipping control issues and the large amounts of capital that go along with this.

When I first started selling on eBay, I was purchasing discount items and doing trading assistant work, wow that was a long time ago. Anyways, When attending my first eBay LIVE! Conference, I started talking to others, learning about affiliate programs online and of course drop shipping. Once I realized that most of the people I talked to who were earning their living on eBay, were doing it by taking advantage of drop shipping. Starting any retail business, whether online or offline, it takes an enormous amount of spending capital in order to start. With the inventory, insurance, employees and other expenses to be purchased before such businesses can open, only entrepreneurs with large amounts of start up funds have any chance of getting out the door with their business plan.

But as any good entrepreneur would see, opportunity is always out there if you use your head and find an alternative way. Wholesale companies are out there, and although finding a good one can be daunting, once the right product and drop shipping company is found, it can make for a great business plan.

Getting Scammed by “Wholesale” Companies Online Claiming to Help “Anyone” to Make Money Working from Home Selling on eBay…..

November 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Getting Scammed by “Wholesale” Companies Online Claiming to Help “Anyone” to Make Money Working from Home Selling on eBay…..

So like I promised at my last entry, following is a simple list on what to look for and what NOT to look for in a reputable Wholesaler and how to tell the difference. Enjoy….

When researching Wholesale companies to find the right one for you….

DON’T DO IT Wholesalers TIPS
A Simple waste of Time and Energy (move on and find another company to research)

Any wholesaler who charges a “fee” either monthly, annually or to sign up for the first time. **Wholesalers that stock inventory, have good product, and ship in large numbers do NOT need to charge a fee….they want your business and are happy to provide you with their product if you are a reputable company yourself. Any company that would ship out product to just ANYONE “for a fee” probably makes most of their money selling people on the “fee” more than actually doing business shipping product.

Wholesalers that stock a “huge variety” of different types of products at a low cost with no rhyme or reason as to what they are stocking. ** Wholesalers should specialize as much as any good eBay Store should specialize in one industry. If the wholesaler ships kitchen gadgets as well as shoes and electronics, how do you, the eBayer placing your business in their hands, how do you know that they are going to have a continuous supply of that item, how do you know they won’t go out of stock, discontinue an item or have any product knowledge or warranties on such product when you the eBayer need them.

Wholesalers that accept anyone and will ship their product out to you without first having you fill out a credit application and business information. ** If a Wholesale company decides they will ship out to you just because you asked…it is time to question. A reputable company will need to see your business information and have signatures on file for things such as your fed tax id# and resale permit numbers and business license. If a company wants to ship out product to your customers with their name on it, they will need to have this information for their own as well as your tax purposes and legal liabilities.

Online Wholesale Companies that Mass Market their Wholesale Site or TV Infomercial Wholesalers looking to Find New People to Sell Their Product. **It is obvious why you don’t want to use these companies…..just about anybody can and will and trust anyone who knows…the market is already absolutely over saturated with this same product from the same suckers trying to sell it online and beat each others price. Good luck to them all…do some research on eBay and you are bound to find any of these products for sale at a price that can barely make them profits much less build a business.

Finding Reputable Wholesalers and NOT Getting Scammed Online….Can It be Done?

November 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Finding Reputable Wholesalers and NOT Getting Scammed Online….Can It be Done?

Of course it CAN…..

But not without some good ole’ effort and time. As with any business, a healthy and profitable online drop-shipping sales site does not start without a solid business plan, a firm and steady product and a good wholesaler. For any drop shipper, the wholesaler is the FOUNDATION of your company. With the wholesaler taking care of both inventory, insurance and storage for the item as well as the packaging, processing, labeling and shipping of the product, they can be either a huge asset or a humonguos liability for your online business.

Once the customer places the order with you on eBay, it is up to you to place the order with the wholesale company. But from that point on, as the drop shipper, you lose a lot of control. You HAVE to rely on that wholesaler company to have the inventory promised, price promised, address placed correctly and ship timing promised and get that product out to your customer. All you can do is sit back and wait and hope that you have chosen the right distributor to get the product to your customers.

At this point in any smart entrepreneurs mind when considering drop shipping, although it can save a ton of money on overhead, it is only a solid business plan if the right, reputable and dependable wholesaler can be found and used. How can that be done is the popular question on everyones lips every time I attend an eBay LIVE! Conference or am at an eBay education seminar. Drop shipping sounds like such an easy idea, and with all the infomercials out there telling us how much money can be made on eBay using wholesalers….it sounds like a piece of cake, right. Lets all jsut open up eBay Stores and start making thousands of dollars in profits in only months!!!!

BACK TO REALITY PEOPLE…..

Just like most infomercials and products featured in this kind of marketing that you see on TV, just like it says in fine print at the bottom of the screen “Results not typical, each story in unique” Truth be told, like I said there is money to be made using eBay and dropshipping product to your customers. In fact, when in the Powerseller area for eBay LIVE in 2006, most of the platinum powersellers that I met, that were there with MORE THAN 2 employees EACH, were earning a living for themselves and their employees full time working on eBay with various drop shippers and had never inventoried an item in their entire eBay Career.

These people were at eBay LIVE! as Titanium and Platinum level powersellers and the majority were drop shippers simply there to enjoy themselves while the hard work to build their eBay Store was done and other than order placement, the stores could practically run themselves. More proof that it can be done, but proof that as the small print says at the bottom of the screen on these TV infomercials can be translated into:

“Results not typical, each story is unique” = Your results won’t be profitable, without some Hard Work”

As with any business and any search for something that is of value, finding it should be hard work and take effort, making the receipt of said object all the more meaningful in the end. Following are some tips on what to look for and what NOT to look for in a reputable wholesaler. But not to fret, this is a very important subject and we will be back soon to cover wholesalers and how to find the right one SOON.

Wholesalers, Finding the Right Product to Sell on eBay from a Reputable Wholesaler

November 5, 2007 · 1 Comment

Finding the right product to sell online is the challenge for most people looking to start their own online business and make money from their own home selling on eBay. Reputable Wholesalers are seemingly as elusive to entrepreneurs looking to start selling on eBay as the mysterious “Bigfoot”.

At the last eBay LIVE!! conference I attended, drop shipping from wholesale companies seemed to be the topic of conversation on everyones lips. I cannot count how many times someone approached me or I overheard someone talking about drop shipping on eBay and how to find a wholesaler who you can trust and with the low prices needed to really sell well on the eBay marketplace. It is not an easy road…..and it shouldn’t be.

Building a good business takes time, effort, money and lots of dedication. Thousands of people are making a living selling goods on eBay and a larger and larger majority of these eBay sellers are simply “drop shippers”. Drop shipping, or simply taking an order online from an online customer and then turning around and ordering that product from a wholesaler and having them ship and inventory the item themselves, has become quite popular recently with the rise in online sales. But with the scams out there and with so many “wannabe” wholesalers calling themselves as such, it is hard to find someone reputable who can ship out product to you at a reasonable enough of a price for selling on eBay.

eBay is a very competitive market and it can be hard to find product from anyone cheap enough without some good hard work and effort. See our next blog entry on how to find that wholesaler, tips to remember, things to avoid when looking at wholesale companies and general information regarding drop shipping on eBay.

Welcome to eBay Tips..Ready to Learn How to Sell Smart on eBay?

November 1, 2007 · Leave a Comment

eBay, Shop Victoriously, the new eBay Slogan that seems to pop up everytime I hear anything and of course it is featured prominently on the eBay Home Page. We are all familiar with eBay, a very well known and trusted online retailer, with thousands of new users signing up each day, is safe and reliable site for most online shoppers. It is hard to browse the internet looking to purchase goods, without coming across eBay and the amazing deals offered every day from the eBay Community. With a little know-how and time, it is amazing the kinds if deals that are out there for the “educated” eBayer. And of course if there are shoppers out there…..it can’t hurt to be a seller in the right market. eBay Presents an exciting and lucrative opportunity for the entrepreneur who is willing to educate himself and spend the time to build an eBay Store business the right way.

Even when turning on the TV this morning, and granted I wake up early for Pacific time, it came up with a “make money selling on eBay” infomercial before I was smart enough to change it to the news. Having been an eBay and Online retailer for the past 7 years, it is normal to wake up early for me. However it seems that when looking for the weather and news on TV as I make my girls breakfast, I can’t help but to notice all of the eBay infomercials and “Make money Online in only days!!” sales pitches being directed at the general public.

Although I am very well aware that you CAN make money online (and a ton of it too), the claims and dramatic “clients” that they show on these programs seem overexagerated to say the least. eBay and the Online sales world present a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs out there with a flare for computers, the internet or even just marketing. The internet market seems to be open to anyone who really wants to put in some hard work and educate themselves on how to build their business as an eBay seller the right way.

As with any retail business offline, a good internet website is not built overnight and without some kind of a business plan. Forming an idea is a good start to opening, but building on that, doing the proper research for your market is key to the success of your company. The internet world is cut-throat with many new products, sites and sellers entering the market every day. Make sure you know what is out there, what your competitors are charging and presenting and what makes you different from them. These kinds of plans and research takes time and is well worth taking your time on. Do it right the first time and you won’t have to reformulate later or as my pops use to say, Measure twice, cut once.

Doing your research for the industry you are entering, finding out what really works on eBay and forming a proper plan before launching are really the keys to your site getting the kind of traffic that you are looking for right from the start. What product are you going to interested in selling. Finding the right product at the right price…….if only it were just that simple…..but it is a start.

Tomorrow we will talk about finding the product to sell and how to go about researching it on eBay to find out if it is even worth your time. The most important first step is figuring out what you are coming to the table with. You want to make sure that the product you have is solid and will work online before you being to formulate that all important business plan that I keep rambling on about. Having a solid product and a solid business plan is a good foundation to start any sucessful business.
